Vaccinium uliginosum subsp. vulcanorum (Kom.) Alsos & Elven
Publ. & Syn.Alsos & Elven, J. Bot. Res. Inst. Texas 2: 442 (2008). - Vaccinium vulcanorum Kom., Repert. Spec. Nov. Regni Veg. 13: 236 (1914). Type (LE): Russian Far East: Kamtchatka, "in alpibus peninsulae Kamtschatka circa lacus Kunotzkoje", 19. Aug. and 02. Sept. 1909, leg. V.L. Komarov. See Khokhrjakov and Mazurenko (1991: 152) for another type designation. - Vaccinium uliginosum var. vulcanorum (Kom.) Jurtz., Byull. Moskovsk. Obshch. Isp. Prir., Otd. Biol. 85, 6: 105 (1980).
NotesYurtsev: Variety vulcanorum is a prostrate-pulvinate dwarf shrub with imbricate, rotundate small leaves, persistent in winter, and globose berries.
Alsos and Elven: Subspecies vulcanorum belongs to the 'amphi-Pacific clade' of Alsos et al. (2002). It could possibly be merged with subsp. occidentale and subsp. pedris within one major genetic entity but is distinct in morphology and probably in ploidy level. These three are partly to largely overlapping in range. Subspecies vulcanorum and subsp. pedris have been observed growing together without transitions in several localities on the Chukchi and Seward peninsulas. We prefer to consider subsp. vulcanorum a low-ploid subspecies and have recombined it as such.
Chromosomes4x. - Alaska (W). - Tetraploid in FCM, Alsos et al. (2002).
