Vaccinium uliginosum subsp. microphyllum (Lange) Tolm.
Publ. & Syn.?Vaccinium gaultherioides Bigelow, New Engl. J. Med. Surg. 5: 335 (1816). Described from the White Mountains in New Hampshire (U.S.A.).
NotesFor Vaccinium gaultherioides, see especially Löve and Boscaiu (1966).
Alsos and Elven: The doubts about Iceland concern which race. The material from Iceland investigated for molecular markers belongs to subsp. uliginosum but there is a report of a tetraploid from southeastern Iceland.
The absence of tetraploid subsp. microphyllum in the Fennoscandian mountains is strange as tetraploids are known to the north (Svalbard and northernmost coastal Norway), east (Russia), south (central and southern European mountains), and west (Greenland). Two possible explanations are that they are present but have not been sampled yet, or that recruitment into the Fennoscandian mountains after the last glaciation took place from the surroundings with lowland octoploid subsp. uliginosum only.
