| Notes | Yurtsev (PAF proposal, comments) stated Arctous erythrocarpa to be the correct name for the plants that reach the Arctic. He considered A. rubra s. str. to be a specifically different, non-arctic species of eastern Asia. Hultén compared Chinese and other eastern Asian plants with arctic ones and concluded that the names A. rubra and A. erythrocarpa referred to the same species (comments on sheets in S). We have compared the same material in 2002 and have reached the same conclusion. We need a documentation of consistent differences betwen A. rubra s. str. and A. erythrocarpa before we reject the former name for the arctic plants. The two names, Arctostaphylos rubra and Arctous erythrocarpa, were published the same year (1914), but the former first. |
