Cortusa matthioli L.
Publ. & Syn.L., Sp. Pl.: 144 (1753). Described from Austria and Siberia. Lectotype not designated (Jarvis 2007: 450). The majority of authors regard the European mountain plants as the type race.
NotesKorobkov: Cortusa matthioli is a Eurasian boreal species, penetrated into the Arctic in northeastern European Russia and in the lower reaches of some of the largest Siberian rivers: Jenisei, Khatanga, and Lena. After assessing morphological differences of the Siberian plants from the European race, and also taking into account the existence of transitional forms in the contact zones, interpreting them as subspecies is suggested as the most appropriate solution. The European subspecies (subsp. matthioli) has round and small-dentate blades thickly trimmed on both sides and alate petioles densely covered with flat, reddish hairs. The eastern Siberian race (subsp. sibirica) is represented by the largest plants, sometimes up to 50 cm high, with less pubescent blades and petioles, and small flowers up to 0.7 cm. The Jenisei race (subsp. altaica) differs in more slender habitus, blades more deeply lobate and large-dentate with more scattered pubescence, and larger flowers.
