NotesVariety williamsii is reported as Cordilleran and possibly amphi-Beringian with arctic records from West Chukotka (uncertain), West Alaska (scattered), North Alaska-Yukon (scattered), and Central Canada (rare). Variety fernaldiana is reported as North American with arctic records from the southwestern Hudson Bay (Hultén and Fries 1986).
Chromosomes32 (4x). - Europe, Siberia, Far East. - Numerous reports, mostly referred by Jalas and Suominen (1994). Reports by Mulligan (1964, for "fernaldiana"), Jonsell (1968, five counts for "fernaldiana"), and Dawe and Murray (1980, for "hispida") from Alaska are from within the range of the proposed var. williamsii. Reports by Löve and Löve (1975d, 1982a) and Mulligan (1984) from Canada are from within the range of var. fernaldiana.
