Barbarea vulgaris W.T. Aiton
Publ. & Syn.Erysimum arcuatum Opiz. ex J. Presl & C. Presl, Fl. Cech.: 138 (1819). Described from the Czech Republic. No type material cited. - Barbarea arcuata (Opiz. ex J. Presl & C. Presl) Rchb., Flora 5: 296 (1822). - Barbarea vulgaris var. arcuata (Opiz ex J. Presl & C. Presl) Fr., Novit. Fl. Svec. Alt.: 205 (1828). - Barbarea vulgaris subsp. arcuata (Opiz ex J. Presl & C. Presl) auct. (see notes).
NotesBarbarea vulgaris is established as an adventive in the Arctic in Iceland and mainland Europe and possibly established in southwestern Greenland (Pedersen 1972), in these regions mainly as "arcuata". However, the established plants in Svalbard (in the Russian settlement of Barentsburg) belong to B. vulgaris s. str. (Liska and Soldán 2004), otherwise known from the Arctic as casual in southwestern Greenland (Pedersen 1972).
There may be some interesting features in the two suggested races, e.g., signs of reproductive disturbance in intermediates between "vulgaris" and "arcuata". The most hardy of the two is clearly "arcuata", in spite of the Svalbard occurrence of "vulgaris". More studies are needed before subspecific taxa can be fully accepted.
The combination B. vulgaris subsp. arcuata has been made several times by at least Simonkai, Bonnier, Hayek, Celakowsky, and Reichenbach. We do not know the priority combination.
Chromosomes(1) 16 (2x, x = 8). - Europe, Canada etc. - Numerous reports, a few for "arcuata".
