Urtica dioica L.
Publ. & Syn.L., Sp. Pl.: 984 (1753). Lectotype (LINN): Europe. Herb. Linn. 1111.8 (Woodland et al. 1982: 283).
NotesLöve and Löve (1975a) reported Urtica dioica s. str. to be tetraploid (2n = 52) and U. gracilis subsp. sondenii diploid (2n = 26). However, a consistent or predominant difference in ploidy levels is not supported by the data. Diploid U. dioica s. str. is now well documented from several places (see below). Intermediates between U. dioica and U. sondenii are reported where they meet and racial rank seems the most appropriate.
