Dasiphora fruticosa (L.) Rydb.
Publ. & Syn.Rydb., Monogr. N. Amer. Potentill.: 188 (1898). - Potentilla fruticosa L., Sp. Pl.: 495 (1753). Described from Europe and Siberia. Lectotype (BM-000628648): Herb. Clifford: 193, Potentilla 3 (Elkington 1969: 156). - Pentaphylloides fruticosa (L.) O. Schwarz, Mitt. Thüring. Bot. Ges. 1: 105 (1949).
NotesKurtto et al. (2004) discussed the main European and southern Siberian plants of Dasiphora fruticosa as subsp. fruticosa and the main northern Siberian and North American plants as subsp. floribunda. Subspecies floribunda is diploid or predominantly so with functionally unisexual flowers. Subspecies fruticosa is tetraploid or higher with functionally bisexual flowers (e.g., Elkington 1969; Klackenberg 1983). Even if the relationships are not entirely clear (plants with the sex distribution of subsp. floribunda seem to occur also in southern European mountains and tetraploids are reported from the northern Siberian Putorana and Lena River areas), we have decided to accept the division. With the possible exception of some northern Siberian plants, the plants that reach the Arctic are diploids and belong to subsp. floribunda.
ChromosomesProbably mainly for subsp. fruticosa:
(1) 21 (3x). - Bowden (1957).
(2) 28 (4x). - Europe, Russia, Siberia (N, S). - Numerous reports.
(3) 42 (6x). - Siberia etc. - At least five reports.
(4) 56 (8x). - Bowden (1957); Grewal (1975).
GeographyDisjunct circumboreal.
