Oxytropis roaldii Ostenf. | |
Publ. & Syn. | Ostenf., Skr. Vidensk.-Selsk. Christiania 1909, Math.-Naturvidensk. Kl. 8: 54 (1910). Holotype (O): Canada: the Yukon Territory, Herschel Island, 13. July 1906, leg. A.H. Lindström. - Oxytropis campestris var. roaldii (Ostenf.) S.L. Welsh, Great Basin Naturalist 51: 386 (1991). - Oxytropis campestris subsp. roaldii (Ostenf.) Cody, Canad. Field-Naturalist 108: 94 (1994). |
Notes | Elven and Murray: Oxytropis roaldii was described with type from Herschel Island in the gap between Canadian and northeastern Alaskan O. arctica subsp. arctica. Hultén (1947: 1106; 1968b) related O. roaldii to O. arctica but he seems to have had only 3-4 collections available, whereas it now is recognized from numerous localities in Alaska, the Yukon Territory, and the Northwest Territories. Welsh (1991) recognized it as a variety of O. campestris and Cody (1994) as a subspecies of the same. Inclusion in O. "campestris" probably confuses the issue. Yurtsev: Oxytropis roaldii is a red/blue-flowered arctic species of the O. adamsiana aggregate (see above). A transfer of it to the O. campestris aggregate cannot be accepted; this is an American regional viewpoint ignoring the circumpolar situation. Elven and Murray: Jorgensen et al. (2003) assumed that the name O. roaldii has been applied for plants they included partly in their O. arctica var. arctica, partly in their O. arctica var. koyukukensis. We retain O. roaldii in the O. arctica relationship but we keep the option open that it may be an American Beringian extension of the O. adamsiana-O. vassilczenkoi group. Its ploidy level is not known. |
