Oxytropis maydelliana Trautv.
Publ. & Syn.Oxytropis campestris var. melanocephala Hook., Fl. Bor.-Amer. 1: 147 (1831). Lectotype (BM): Canada: the Northwest Territories or Nunavut, "Bear Lake to the Arctic Shores and Islands", leg. Richardson et al. (Welsh 1995: 276). - Oxytropis maydelliana subsp. melanocephala (Hook.) A.E. Porsild, Bull. Natl. Mus. Canada 216: 47 (1966).
NotesGillespie and Elven: Two races of Oxytropis maydelliana have been proposed: an amphi-Beringian subsp. maydelliana east to the Mackenzie River and a North American subsp. melanocephala from the Mackenzie eastwards. The main diagnostic differences reported for subsp. melanocephala vs. subsp. maydelliana is in the pubescence in the inflorescence (see, e.g., Porsild and Cody 1980). These characters did not hold when inspecting a larger Canadian material (CAN). Gillett et al. (2007) did not recognize races of O. maydelliana. We do not accept the subspecies.
Chromosomes96 (12x). - Far East (N), Alaska, Canada (E). - Several reports, numerous counts. For subsp. melanocarpa: Löve and Löve (1982b); Gervais and Blondeau (1999).
GeographyAmphi-Beringian - North American (N): RFE ALA CAN.
