Oxytropis czukotica Jurtz. | |
Publ. & Syn. | Oxytropis tschuktschorum auct., non Jurtz., Bot. Zhurn. 53: 1538 (1968). |
Notes | Yurtsev: The only locality for Oxytropis czukotica in North America is Ogotoruk Creek at Cape Thompson in northwestern Alaska. Elven and Murray: However, Yurtsev did annotate three specimens from the Seward Peninsula and one from the Brooks Range as O. czukotica. We agree with Yurtsev's identifications of these specimens and have added 1-2 more specimens. Occurrence of this species in western and northern Alaska is not surprising. Oxytropis czukotica is very frequent in East Chukotka, almost within sight of western Alaska. Yurtsev considered the diploid Asian Pacific O. pumilio a possible immediate ancestor of O. czukotica. Oxytropis pumilio was, however, proposed kept outside this aggregate by Yurtsev. |
Chromosomes | 32 (4x). - Siberia (N), Far East (N). - Numerous reports, close to 50 counts, mainly for O. tschuktschorum. Not included: Two reports of 2n = 16 (2x) from northeastern Asia (Gurzenkov and Pavlova 1984; Pavlova et al. 1989), both for O. czukotica. Both Zhukova (1983) and Yurtsev (PAF proposal) reported O. czukotica to be uniformly tetraploid (2n = 32). |
