Publ. & Syn.Turrill, Bot. Mag. 173: 382 (1962). - Betula crispa Dryl. ex Aiton, Hort. Kew. 2: 339 (1789). Inst. Komarova Akad. Nauk SSSR 17: 96 (1955), in obs. - Duschekia crispa (Dryl. ex Aiton) Pouzar, Preslia 36: 339 (1964).
NotesThe majority of authors (e.g., Hultén 1968a; Cody 1996) applied, at least until the 1990s, the name "crispa" for the predominant race in Alaska and the Yukon Territory. Furlow (1997) restricted subsp. crispa to northeastern North America and Greenland and assigned the northwestern North American plants to the otherwise Eurasian subsp. fruticosa. We follow that solution.
