Salix myrsinifolia subsp. borealis (Fr.) Hyl.
Publ. & Syn.Hyl., Nordisk Kärlväxtfl. 2: 387 (1966). - Salix nigricans var. borealis Fr., Bot. Not. 1840: 193 (1840). Lectotype (UPS!): Sweden: Torne lappmark, Karesuando. Fries, Herb. Norm. fasc. 7: 63 (Elven in Jonsell 1996: 4). - Salix borealis (Fr.) Nasarow, Fl. URSS 5: 87 (1936).
NotesFries' var. borealis is characterized by subglabrous, yellowish green leaves without bloom on the lower surface, and mostly glabrous capsules. This is a northeastern lowland plant in Fennoscandia. Another morph occurs in the mountains and in the northern and northwestern lowlands, with hairy, dark green leaves without or with some lower surface bloom, and most often with hairy capsules. This second morph is the one introduced and spreading in Iceland. It is not at all clear that the two morphs should be merged into one race.
Chromosomes(1) 114 (6x). - Europe (N, C). - Numerous but mainly old reports for S. myrsinifolia (s. str.).
(2) 152 (8x). - Europe (N). - Marklund in Löve and Löve (1942b, for S. borealis).
Löve and Löve (1975a) listed several reports but the original sources should be checked as only a few of them are found under the relevant names in Fedorov (1969).
Not included: A fairly recent report of deviating numbers from central Europe is Büchler (1985, 2n = 77, 79, 80).
