Salix lanata var. lanata
Publ. & Syn.L., Sp. Pl.: 1019 (1753). Lectotype (LINN): Sweden: "Lapland". Herb. Linn. 1158.54 (Jonsell and Jarvis 1994: 151).
NotesArgus, Skvortsov, and Elven: The Svalbard plant previously assigned to S. glauca, S. callicarpaea, or in the last decade to S. arctica (by Elven 1994; Elven and Elvebakk 1996; Pálsson 2000), very rarely flowers in nature (se www:\\svalbardflora.net). It was brought into cultivation in 2002, flowered, was examined by all of us, and proved to be S. lanata. The plant is very rare and has only been known from two localities 120 km apart, in one of these with a single plant (now dead, but documented in the herbaria before its demise), in the other with a few barely surviving shrubs. Plants from both sites belong to S. lanata, suggesting that this species previously may have had a larger range in Svalbard. We provisionally assign the Svalbard plant to var. lanata.
