Epilobium lactiflorum Hausskn.
Publ. & Syn.Epilobium alpinum L., Sp. Pl.: 348 (1753) [nom. rejic.]. Described from mountains in central and northern Europe: "Helveticis, Lapponicis". Lectotype (LINN): Herb. Linn. 486.8 (Marshall 1907: 367).
NotesThe lack of type has made the name Epilobium lactiflorum ambiguous to many authors. Several North American authors consider E. lactiflorum a variety of E. hornemannii. This is difficult to accept from a Scandinavian viewpoint. What we regard as E. lactiflorum in Scandinavia differs distinctly morphologically from E. hornemannii. The two species are often found together, sometimes in mixed stands, although E. lactiflorum prefers slightly drier sites. Transitional forms are sometimes found but then with near or full seed abortion, i.e., sterile hybrids (as among other species of Epilobium). In at least one of their main regions of co-occurrence, E. hornemannii and E. lactiflorum behave like independent species.
