Saxifraga rivularis subsp. rivularis
Publ. & Syn.L., Sp. Pl.: 404 (1753). Lectotype: Sweden: "Lapland". Linnaeus, Flora Lapponica: t. 2, f. 7. 1737. (Jonsell and Jarvis 2002: 73). See their reasons for rejection of the lectotype (S) Herb. Linn. 174.5, designated by Webb (1987b: 264).
NotesZhmylev: Saxifraga rivularis s. str. is an amphi-Atlantic species. At present, only plants with runners and 2n = ca. 52 are attributed to S. rivularis s. str.
Jørgensen and Elven: Subspecies rivularis is separable from subsp. arctolitoralis in hypanthium sparsely covered by short glandular hairs (up to 0.2 mm) with colourless or weakly coloured partition walls vs. densely covered by longer glandular hairs (0.3-0.6 mm) with purple partition walls; the whole plant green or with some colour in the inflorescence vs. distinctly coloured at least in the inflorescence; and flowering stems mostly long (2-7 cm) and glabrous or sparsely hairy vs. short (1.5-3 cm) and sparsely to densely hairy (Jørgensen et al. 2006).
Chromosomes43-95 52 (4x). - Europe (N), Canada (E), Greenland. - Numerous reports, e.g., Guldahl et al. (2005, Svalbard nine counts of 2n = 26?, 43, 47, 50-52, 52, 85, and 95, often endopolyploidy, otherwise aneuploidy). Tetraploid in FCM, Jørgensen et al. (2006, southern and central Norway, Svalbard, Greenland, Jan Mayen, Iceland, 37 plants from 19 populations); Guldahl et al. (2005, Iceland, eastern Greenland, six plants).
Not included: A report of 2n = 52 (4x) from the Rocky Mountains (Löve et al. 1971) is enigmatic as this is the area of the diploid S. flexuosa only (or of diploid S. debilis). In absence of voucher the matter cannot be resolved.
GeographyAmphi-Atlantic - European (N) - Asian (NW): ICE NOR RUS SIB CAN GRL.
