Saxifraga funstonii (Small) Fedde | |
Publ. & Syn. | Fedde, Just's Bot. Jahresber. 33: 613 (1906). - Leptasea funstonii Small, N. Amer. Fl. 22, 2: 154 (1905). Holotype (NY): Alaska: Yakutat Bay, Disenchantment Bay, 05. Aug. 1892, leg. F. Funston 91. - Saxifraga bronchialis subsp. funstonii (Small) Hultén, Fl. Kamtchatka 3: 12 (1929). |
Notes | Zhmylev: Saxifraga funstonii is a mainly arctic amphiBeringian species differing from S. spinulosa in long cilia and broad petals but with transitions (hybridization?) in regions where they grow together. Therefore, the western boundary of S. funstonii in Siberia is not entirely clear. Elven: The transitions perhaps might indicate rank as race or (due to the chromosome number variation) a highly polyploid hybrid complex. |
Chromosomes | ca. 80-112. - Siberia (N), Far East (N), Alaska, Canada (NW). - Several reports. Not included: Zhukova and Petrovsky (1977) reported 2n = 48 and 48-52 from West Chukotka and Zhukova and Petrovsky (1987a) reported 16 counts with a range from 2n = 28 to 112 under this name from northeastern Asia. They probably applied the name in a much wider meaning than done by Zhmylev. The reports and counts need sorting by voucher inspection. |
