Saxifraga hirculus subsp. compacta Hedberg
Publ. & Syn.Leptasea alaskana Small, N. Amer. Fl. 22, 2: 152 (1905). Described from Barrow (Alaska).
NotesZhmylev: The majority of the section is often traditionally regarded as geographical races of one polymorphic species, Saxifraga flagellaris Willd. s. lat. Two species are proposed to be present in the Arctic. Webb and Gornall (1989) treated them as subspecies.
Elven: Also Brouillet and Elvander (2009b) treated the two taxa as subspecies. We find the morphological differences between them clear, both in North America where they are nearly allopatric and in Eurasia where there at least is some overlap. No transition forms are documented or suggested and there is a ploidy difference. We can see no reason for not accepting two species, both different from S. flagellaris s. str.
Chromosomes32 (4x). - Europe (Iceland, Svalbard), Greenland (E). - At least six localities, by Hedberg (1992) also mentioned with counts from the "Soviet Union" and from Alaska.
GeographyNorth American (NE) - amphi-Atlantic - European (N) - Asian (N) - amphi-Beringian: ICE NOR RUS SIB RFE ALA CAN GRL.
