Micranthes nivalis (L.) Small
Publ. & Syn.Small, N. Amer. Fl. 22, 2: 136 (1905). - Saxifraga nivalis L., Sp. Pl.: 401 (1753). Lectotype (LINN): Europe. Herb. Linn. 575.19, far right specimen (Jonsell and Jarvis 2002: 72). These authors rejected as post-1753 material the lectotype (LINN) proposed by Webb (1987b: 262-263), i.e., Herb. Linn. 575.18, left-hand specimen.
NotesFor Saxifraga [Micranthes] x jamalensis (Zhmylev & Razzhivin), see Excluded taxa.
Chromosomes(1) 60 56-62 (6x). - Europe (N, C), Russia (N), Siberia (N), Far East (N), Alaska, Canada, Greenland. - Numerous reports.
(2) ca. 70 (7x). - Siberia (NW). - Devyatov et al. (1997).
Krause and Beamish (1973) reported the chromosome numbers 2n = 20, 40, and 60 for the M. nivalis-tenuis complex from British Columbia and the Yukon Territory, perhaps the only report of an intermediate (2n = 40) ploidy level.
Not included: A report of 2n = 120 (12x) from western Greenland (Dalgaard 1989). This number is found in M. hieraciifolia which may resemble M. nivalis when small-grown. The voucher should be checked.
