Suaeda maritima (L.) Dumort.
Publ. & Syn.?Suaeda arctica Jurtz. & V.V. Petrovsky, Bot. Zhurn. 63: 371 (1978). Holotype (LE): Russian Far East: West Chukotka, "litus orientale sinus Tschaunensis ad ostium fl. Apapelchin", 04. Aug. 1968, leg. A. Korobkov and V. Petrovsky.
NotesYurtsev: [Suaeda arctica] Dwarf plants, often flowering already from the cotyledons. Most closely related to S. maritima. Found in one estuary but later destroyed there; subsequently found in another locality.
Elven: Very similar dwarf plants of S. maritima have been found in other arctic or near-arctic situations, e.g., in northeastern Norway (Finnmark: Sør-Varanger, TRH) ca. 1200 km from the nearest known locality of S. maritima. Also these had a neotenic behaviour, flowering from the lowermost nodes, and they disappeared after a short time. We have interpreted them as casual occurrences resulting from dispersal by birds or (less probably) sea currents, and just as a modification. Either S. arctica is extremely disjunct and casual or it must be re-interpreted. For the time being, we include S. arctica in S. maritima.
