Atriplex longipes subsp. praecox (Hülph.) Turesson | |
Publ. & Syn. | Atriplex nudicaule Bogusl., Lesn. Zhurn. 1: 30 (1846) [or in: Erman, Archiv 6: 65]. Described from the Arkhangelsk area (European Russia). |
Notes | Atriplex longipes subsp. praecox is the taxon behind the majority of reports for A. patula from northern and arctic parts of Europe and Greenland, perhaps also Canada (see Excluded taxa). Gustafsson reported only some hybrids with reduced fertility between the eastern and northern subsp. praecox and the western and southern subsp. longipes in northwestern Europe. Acceptance of two species is an alternative. In that case, the name A. nudicaule Bogusl. 1846 seems to be the priority name. See also Welsh (2003). For a possible record from Bear Island, see A. glabriuscula. The species/subspecies has not been recognized recently from Iceland (Gustafsson 2001; Kristinsson 2010) but was found in 2010 in 1-2 sites. It may reach the arctic parts. Mature Greenlandic plants are confirmed to belong to A. longipes and probably subsp. praecox. |
Chromosomes | 18 (2x). - Europe (N). - At least three reports, ca. 35 counts. Not included: A report of 2n = 36 (4x) from the Borderline Arctic at Vadsø in Norway (Laane 1971) must be discounted. It was made on PMC (n = 18). The voucher sheet (O) contains plants of two taxa (A. longipes subsp. praecox and A. lapponica). There is no indication on which of these the count was made. In addition, both taxa are otherwise known only as diploids. |
