Silene violascens (Tolm.) V.V. Petrovsky & Elven
Publ. & Syn.?Lychnis uniflora Ledeb., Mém. Acad. Imp. Sci. St. Pétersbourg Hist. Acad. 5: 536 (1815). Holotype (LE!): Siberia: "Herb. Ledeb. In Sibiria transbaicalensi, lect. am. Tilesius". - ?Gastrolychnis uniflora (Ledeb.) Tzvelev, Bot. Zhurn. 85, 11: 101 (2000).
NotesPetrovsky and Elven: We consider Silene violascens a boreal Siberian plant, mainly found in the forest zone. It may be recognizable as a species but is very similar to S. uralensis subsp. uralensis. Sekretareva (1999) reported it to reach the Arctic in Taimyr and to possibly reach the Borderline Arctic in the Khatanga drainage and Yana-Kolyma. It occurs along the Lena River north into the Arctic (collected 2004, O) and is indicated also from the Anadyr drainage but probably not its arctic parts. Initial molecular investigations (Oxelman, Petri, unpubl.) have not revealed differences from S. uralensis. It may have to be included in S. uralensis, then perhaps as a race.
We suspect that Gastrolychnis uniflora (Ledeb.) Tzvelev (Lychnis uniflora Ledeb.), which Tzvelev considers synonymous with Gastrolychnis uralensis, may be a small plant of S. violascens.
