Wilhelmsia Rchb.
Publ. & Syn.Merckia Fisch. ex Cham. & Schltdl., Linnaea 1: 59 (1826), non Merkia Borkh. (1792).
NotesMurray and Elven: McNeill (1960) argued that Wilhelmsia Rchb. 1828 is the valid name for this genus because Merckia Cham. & Schltdl. 1826 is antedated by Merkia Borkh. 1792 (Jungermanniales).
The relationship between the Beringian endemic genus Wilhelmsia and the widespread Honckenya suggested by morphological similarity is now supported by molecular evidence (Nepokroeff et al. 2002).
