Sagina nivalis (Lindblom) Fr.
Publ. & Syn.Sagina intermedia Fenzl in Ledeb., Fl. Ross. 1: 339 (1842 October). Described from St. Lawrence Bay in East Chukotka (the Russian Far East). - Spergella intermedia (Fenzl) Á. Löve & D. Löve, Bot. Not. 128: 508 (1976).
Chromosomes56 (8x). - Europe (N), Far East (N), Alaska. - Johnson and Packer (1968); Löve (1970a); Packer and McPherson (1974); Löve and Löve (1975c); Petrovsky and Zhukova (1983b).
Not included: Crow (2005) accepted both 2n = 56 and 88 [84-88] for S. nivalis. It is improbable that both numbers are present in this species. We suspect that the reports of 2n = 84-88 are based on misidentified S. caespitosa (see below): Löve and Löve (1948 northwestern Europe, 1956b Iceland, 2n = 88); Blackburn and Morton (1957 northwestern Europe, 2n = 84); Crow (1978 North America, 2n = ca. 88). Three of the five reports of 2n = 56 are from areas where S. caespitosa is absent (Alaska and Chukotka), whereas all reports of 2n = 84-88 are from regions where S. caespitosa is present. Löve and Löve (1975a) reported 2n = 56 for S. nivalis and omitted the other reports (including their own), in this case probably justifiably so.
