Cerastium fontanum subsp. fontanum
Publ. & Syn.Cerastium fontanum subsp. scandicum Gartner, Repert. Spec. Nov. Regni Veg. Beih. 113: 68 (1939). Described from Greenland, Iceland, the Faeroes, Scandinavia, the Kola Peninsula, and the Arkhangelsk region. Numerous syntypes cited.
NotesEven if subsp. fontanum is not regularly recognized in the majority of Russian floras, it must be frequent in parts of European Russia. Kuzeneva (1956) mapped it as such for the Murman area and other sources report it east to the Kanin Peninsula.
Chromosomes140 144 (8x). - Europe. - Numerous reports.
Not included: Reports of 2n = 72, 140, and 144 from North America (Taylor and Mulligan 1968; Mulligan 1984; Shildneck and Jones 1986). The subspecies is not yet accepted from mainland North America. The reports probably belong to subsp. vulgare.
