Rumex acetosella subsp. arenicola Y. Mäkinen ex Elven
Publ. & Syn.Rumex graminifolius auct. plur. & sensu Á. Löve, non Lamb. (1811).
NotesWe have seen specimens from Newfoundland, western and eastern Greenland (named by Löve as Acetosella graminifolia and the Greenland ones indicated by Mosyakin 2005 as Rumex graminifolius), Iceland, northern Fennoscandia, and northern European Russia (also in these regions named by Löve as Acetosella graminifolia). This is a native arctic(-alpine) plant in the North Atlantic regions, very rarely weedy. It occurs in many areas where the other races are absent even as weeds, e.g., in its type area in northeastern Greenland.
Rumex acetosella subsp. arenicola resembles the Beringian R. beringensis and R. krausei in general habit but not in ochreas, tepals, and nuts. It is connected to the other subspecies of R. acetosella by the comparatively small nuts and tepals, a difference especially from R. aureostigmaticus and R. graminifolius.
Chromosomes(1) 42 (6x). - Greenland. - Jørgensen et al. (1958, within the range of only subsp. arenicola).
(2) 48-50. - Russia (Kolguev). - Sokolovskaya and Strelkova (1960, for R. graminifolius but may belong to this race).
GeographyAmphi-Atlantic - European (N): ICE NOR RUS GRL.
