Polygonum aviculare L. | |
Publ. & Syn. | L., Sp. Pl.: 362 (1753). Lectotype (LINN): Europe. Herb. Linn. 510.23 (Styles 1960: 294). |
Notes | Polygonum aviculare s. str. is the most widespread species of the aggregate. All reports from the Arctic are probably based on adventive plants but the species is established in several arctic localities, at least in Iceland, Norway, European Russia, and Greenland. |
Chromosomes | (1) 40 (4x). - Europe (N), Siberia (N), Canada. - Zhukova and Petrovsky (1987a, for P. heterophyllum); Wolf and McNeill (1987, Canada, numerous counts); Lövkvist and Hultgård (1999, Sweden). (2) 60 (6x). - Europe, Canada. - Löve and Löve (1956a, for P. heterophyllum); Styles (1962); Mertens and Raven (1965); Löve and Ritchie (1966); McNeill (1981, for P. monspeliense); Wolf and McNeill (1987, four counts). There are numerous earlier reports under this name but probably belonging to other taxa. The reports of hexaploids referred by Löve and Löve (1975a) should be critically checked against vouchers before acceptance. These authors assumed one ploidy level per species in this group and assigned reports accordingly, whereas other authors have reported two levels in several species. Some other reports of hexaploids seem reliable. |
