Papaver chionophilum V.V. Petrovsky
Publ. & Syn.V.V. Petrovsky, Bot. Zhurn. 68: 233 (1983). Holotype (LE!): Russian Far East: Wrangel Island, "ad sinum Somnitelnaja, ad fl. Somnitelnaja", 05. Aug. 1971, leg. V.V. Petrovsky.
NotesPapaver chionophilum is only provisionally accepted. It is, as far as known, restricted to Wrangel Island. Petrovsky (1999) suggested that it might belong within the variation of P. lapponicum subsp. orientale, but as octoploid in opposition to the otherwise hexaploid P. lapponicum (subsp. orientale) on Wrangel Island. However, the majority of P. lapponicum elsewhere (North America, Greenland, Norway, European Russia) is octoploid. We do not accept P. lapponicum from Wrangel Island. Our sampling for the AFLP analysis included a large material along Somnitelnaya River in Wrangel Island, the type locality of P. chionophilum. It may be present in our material, but no part of this material joined with the P. lapponicum - radicatum main branch in the AFLP or morphological analyses.
