Publ. & Syn.V.V. Petrovsky, Bot. Zhurn. 70: 113 (1985). Holotype (LE!): Russian Far East: West Chukotka, "districtus Bilibinskij, montes Anjujensis, jugum Ilirnejensis, ad lacus Ilirnej Superior", 18. July 1973, leg. V.V. Petrovsky 73-26.
NotesPapaver hypsipetes is only provisionally accepted. Petrovsky (1999) reported P. hypsipetes to be a local species of the mountains of West Chukotka. He considered it a close relative of P. lapponicum subsp. orientale. Morphologically, it differs from the main body of P. lapponicum (incl. subsp. orientale) in glaucous green leaves with approximate, often strap-shaped lobes with some reddish tinge (normally absent in P. lapponicum s. lat.), very small flowers, and very small and initially glaucous green capsules. In some of these features it differs appreciably from all parts of P. lapponicum s. lat. Papaver hypsipetes is at a lower ploidy level than any known member of P. lapponicum s. lat.
