Papaver stanovense (Petroch.) Peschkova
Publ. & Syn.Peschkova, Fl. Sib. 7: 28 (1994 [1995]). - Papaver croceum subsp. stanovense Petroch., Vysok. Fl. Stanovogo Nagorya: 96 (1972). Described from the sources of Barguzin River on the Yuzhno-Muisk mountain range, Stanovoye Nagorye (Siberia).
NotesThe diploid Papaver stanovense is morphologically distinct. It is also an ecological specialist, growing in dense vegetation in snowbank habitats. Peschkova (1994a) considered it restricted to the mountains to the northeast of Lake Baikal. There are numerous collections from farther northeast in the Russian Far East, north to the northern Magadan region, that may belong to this species. These have been identified in Russian Far East collections and floras as the related P. stubendorffii Tolm. (see below). The northernmost records of plants closely resembling P. stanovense are close to the Arctic in northeastern Yakutia and the Kolyma Mountains (southern parts of West Chukotka), perhaps also from South Chukotka, but these plants more likely belong to P. stubendorfii.
Sequence data indicate that P. stanovense is related to diploid P. croceum (Solstad unpubl.) as also indicated from morphology.
Chromosomes14 (2x). - Siberia (SE). - Krogulevich in Herb. NSK on the type specimen.
