Papaver croceum Ledeb.
Publ. & Syn.Papaver nudicaule auct., non L. (1753).
NotesPapaver croceum is a native of southern Siberia, Central Asia, and northern China, and has for more than 200 years been cultivated as an ornamental ('Siberian Poppy') and erroneously named P. nudicaule. It escapes and has become well established in several arctic sites in the North Atlantic regions. The 'Siberian Poppy' is a group of cultivars but the majority of them are still morphologically close to the native P. croceum of the Altai and surrounding areas.
The majority of reports of diploid chromosome numbers previously assigned to P. "nudicaule" belong to P. croceum, but tetraploids are known within P. croceum s. lat. (Rändel 1974; Solstad 2009).
Chromosomes(1) 14 (2x). - Siberia, Asia (C). - Numerous reports, mostly as P. nudicaule.
(2) 28 (4x). - Escaped garden plants, Alaska. - Solstad (2009, one plant). Tetraploid in FCM, Solstad (2009, one plant).
