Ranunculus sulphureus Sol.
Publ. & Syn.Ranunculus altaicus auct., non Laxm. (1774).
NotesIn addition to the mainly arctic var. sulphureus there is a non-arctic var. intercedens Hultén in Kamtchatka and the Aleutian Islands.
The name Ranunculus altaicus Laxm. has sometimes been applied to arctic plants. Ranunculus altaicus is a related but diploid (2n = 16, Krasnikov and Schaulo 1986) southern Siberian species differing also in morphological characters.
Chromosomes(1) 64 (8x). - Russia (N), Siberia (S). - At least four reports.

Löve and Löve (1975a) omitted reports of all other numbers than 2n = 96 for this species.
Not included: A report of 2n = ca. 56 from eastern Greenland (Böcher 1938a), see Jørgensen et al. (1958: 63). Possibly confused with R. nivalis. Reports of 2n = 42 from Melville and Devon islands in arctic Canada (Mosquin and Hayley 1966; Scott 1974a) should be checked against vouchers.
