Ranunculus peltatus Schrank
Publ. & Syn.Batrachium dichotomum Schmalh., Trudy S.-Peterburgsk. Obshch. Estestvoisp. 5, 2: 18 (1874). Described from lakes Glubokoe and Kopenskoe in the Yamburg area (European Russia). Type in LE. - Ranunculus dichotomus (Schmalh.) N.I. Orlova, Fl. Murmansk. Obl. 3: 289 (1956).
NotesRanunculus peltatus reaches far north in Norway but not the Arctic.
Tzvelev: The valid name within Batrachium is B. floribundum because B. peltatum (Schrank) V.V. Petrovsky 1971 is predated by B. peltatum Bercht. & J. Presl 1823. Within Ranunculus, R. peltatus has priority.
Elven: Note, however, that Babington (1855) based his description of R. floribundus on morphological differences from R. peltatus. Type examination is needed.
Chromosomes32 (4x). - Europe (N, C). - Numerous reports; Jalas and Suominen (1989) referred several recent counts.
Vouchered northern European reports are of tetraploids (Dahlgren and Jonsell 2001).
Not included: Until a thorough check of vouchers can be undertaken, we exclude all reports of numbers different from 2n = 32. Diploids (2n = 16) are reported by Cook (1966); Göpfert (1974); Ferrarella et al. (1981, 1983, southern Europe); Queirós (1987, southwestern Europe); Diosdado et al. (1993, southwestern Europe). Pentaploids (2n = 40) are reported by Dahlgren (1991, southeastern Europe), possibly from a hybrid. Hexaploids (2n = 48) are reported by Cook (1966); Dahlgren (1991, southeastern Europe). Löve and Löve (1975a) accepted only five reports of hexaploids (2n = 48) for this species.
