Publ. & Syn.L., Sp. Pl.: 60 (1753). Lectotype (UPS): Europe. Herb. Burser 1:16 (Cope in Cafferty et al. 2000: 245). An earlier proposed lectotype (LINN 82.31) is not original material.
NotesAlopecurus geniculatus is an established adventive in the Arctic in Norway and also in southwestern Greenland (Pedersen 1972). It has been considered native in the Arctic in Iceland (Kristinsson 2008) but is probably anthropochorous also there.
Chromosomes28 (4x). - Europe, Russia, Far East, Canada. - Numerous reports.
Not included: Several reports of 2n = 14 (2x) from India. They probably belong to another species.
