Puccinellia beringensis Tzvelev
Publ. & Syn.Tzvelev, Novosti Sist. Vyssh. Rast. 10: 86 (1973). Holotype (LE): Russian Far East: East Chukotka, coast of Bering Strait between Cape Leimin and the estuary of Kitulinveem River, 04. Aug. 1970, leg. Kozhevnikov, Nechaev, and Yurtsev.
NotesElven: Tzvelev (1976) interpreted Puccinellia beringensis to be a hybrid: "P. tenella s. lat. x P. wrightii subsp. wrightii, found in abundance at some places". The hybrid hypothesis, which involves two diploid and assumedly sexual parental species and an also diploid offspring, is not very convincing as the plant is reported to occur "in abundance".
Tzvelev: Puccinellia beringensis is an interesting hybrid of unclear origin. It can be omitted to simplify the situation.
Elven and Solstad: No, we do not want to do that. We studied a large population of this taxon in a locality in East Chukotka in 2005. The plants were pollen and fruit fertile, co-occurred with P. tenella, and showed no feature indicating a hybrid origin from that species or from P. wrightii which occurred in the vicinity. Our contention at present is that P. beringensis should be accepted as a probably diploid, non-hybridogeneous species of sect. Pseudocolpodium.
