Publ. & Syn.Kitag., Rep. Inst. Sci. Res. Manchoukuo 1: 255 (1937). - Atropis hauptiana Trin. ex V.I. Krecz., Fl. URSS 2: 485, 763 (1934). Holotype (LE TRIN-2768-039): Siberia: "in circulo Kurganico", leg. Haupt, left hand specimen. - Phippsia hauptiana (Trin. ex V.I. Krecz.) Á. Löve & D. Löve, Bot. NotesFrom Canada, Puccinellia hauptiana is reported from a very isolated Borderline Arctic locality at Winisk River on Hudson Bay (Hultén 1968a; Scoggan 1978b).
Hughes (1978), followed by Soreng et al. (2003), reduced P. hauptiana to subspecies of P. distans and Davis and Consaul (2007) synonymized P. hauptiana with P. distans. Hughes and Halliday (1980) applied the name P. distans in Europe in a broad way. A close relationship between P. distans and P. hauptiana was stated by Sørensen in Hultén (1950). The predominant tetraploid chromosome number distinguishes P. hauptiana from the mainly hexaploid group of P. capillaris, P. distans, and P. coarctata-nutkaënsis. The treatment of Davis and Consaul (2007) still leaves us in doubt about how to treat this species or group in a circumpolar framework.
