Puccinellia phryganodes subsp. phryganodes
Publ. & Syn.Puccinellia phryganodes "Beringian type" sensu Sørensen (1953).
NotesWe have inspected the type of Poa phryganodes Trin. (see above) and much material in the field around "Kotzebue-Sund" and assume that Trinius' Poa phryganodes is this seminiferous plant. It is probably sexual as it flowers regularly, with good anther development and pollen production, and good seed set (but see Tzvelev 1976: 496). We also assume that the western Alaskan tetraploid count (Johnson and Packer 1968) belongs to this narrowly Beringian race.
The limit of the fertile Beringian race in North America is not clear. It might be confined to the Bering Sea and Strait coasts as proposed by Sørensen (1953: 55). Plants from the Alaskan north coast (e.g., the Barrow region) are pollen sterile and may belong to either the predominantly tetraploid "Siberian" race or the predominantly triploid "Neoarctic" race. The report of Packer and McPherson (1974) of a tetraploid is from the Barrow area.
Chromosomes28 (4x). - Far East (N), Alaska. - Zhukova (1966, 1967a); Johnson and Packer (1968).
Not included: Reports of 2n = 28 from West Chukotka (Zhukova and Petrovsky 1976) and northern Alaska (Packer and McPherson 1974). These reports could belong to subsp. sibirica.
