NotesFestuca saximontana reaches the Arctic in Quebec and in southwestern Greenland but is more southern in the west in Alaska and the Yukon Territory. Soreng et al. (2003) and Darbyshire and Pavlick (2007) accepted the following as a Cordilleran race: Festuca saximontana subsp. purpusiana (St.-Yves) Tzvelev, Bot. Zhurn. 56: 1254 (1971) [Festuca ovina var. purpusiana St.-Yves, Candollea 2: 247 (1925), type: U.S.A.: California, Farewell Gap, 1894, leg. Purpus 3076 and 5117; Festuca purpusiana (St.-Yves) Tzvelev, Zlaki SSSR: 406 (1976)]. It does not reach the Arctic in North America. Tzvelev (1976) reported it (as F. purpusiana) from the Chukchi Peninsula but the material should be re-checked. We have not accepted this record.
Chromosomes42 (6x). - Alaska, Canada, U.S.A. - At least four reports, one for "purpusiana".
Not included: A report of 2n = 36 from Colorado (Kapoor and Löve 1969).
