Calamagrostis lapponica subsp. sibirica (Petrov) Tzvelev
Publ. & Syn.Calamagrostis lapponica var. nearctica A.E. Porsild, Sargentia 4: 10 (1943). Holotype (CAN): Canada: the Northwest Territories, the Mackenzie River Delta, East Branch, 6840'N, 12. Aug. 1934, leg. A.E. Porsild.
NotesIn Norway, subsp. sibirica is restricted to the northernmost parts but do not reach the Arctic. The identity between the Greenland and North American plants and Eurasian subsp. sibirica needs confirmation. Above we have assumed that the names "groenlandica" and "nearctica" belong within subsp. sibirica.
Chromosomes(1) 28 32 (4x). - Russia (N), Siberia (E), Canada. - Sokolovskaya and Strelkova (1960); Bowden (1960b); Belaeva and Siplivinsky (1981). For a report from European Russia (Sokolovskaya and Strelkova 1960), see below.
(2) 42 (6x). - Europe (N), Far East (N), Canada, Greenland. - Several reports, mainly for C. sibirica or var. groenlandica.
(3) 49 (7x). - Europe (N). - Nygren (1946).
The report of a tetraploid count from Kolguev in European Russia (Sokolovskaya and Strelkova 1960) is enigmatic. Other researchers have reported only high-polyploids from that area. Also the other tetraploid counts should be considered critically. Vouchers need to be checked for possible misidentifications (i.e., C. neglecta).
