NotesThe majority of northwestern European and North American authors have included Avenella in Deschampsia (e.g., Clarke 1980a; Chiapella et al. in Soreng et al. 2003; Barkworth 2007b). We accept it as a morphologically and cytologically distinct segregate at rank of genus, like Vahlodea (below). See Chiapella (2007) for molecular support.

Not included: A report of 2n = 42 from the Russian Far East (Sokolovskaya and Probatova 1975) should be checked against voucher before acceptance.
