Hierochloë odorata subsp. arctica (J. Presl) Tzvelev
Publ. & Syn.Tzvelev, Zlaki SSSR: 349 (1976). - Hierochloë arctica J. Presl in C. Presl, Reliq. Haenk. 1: 252 (1830). Lectotype (PR 25243): Canada: British Columbia, Vancouver Island, Nootka Sound, leg. Hänke (Weimarck 1971: 150). - Hierochloë hirta subsp. arctica (J. Presl) G. Weim., Bot. Not. 124: 150 (1971). - Anthoxanthum hirtum subsp. arcticum (J. Presl) G.C. Tucker, Harvard Pap. Bot. 1, 9: 66 (1996).
NotesGreenland is added to Weimarck's (1971) treatment. We have confirmed a specimen (O), not seen by Weimarck, from southern Greenland. Allred and Barkworth (2007) synonymized Hierochloë arctica with Anthoxanthum hirtum. For reasons stated above, we do not follow that solution.
Chromosomes(1) 56 (8x). - Europe (N), Russia (N), Siberia (N), Far East (N), Canada, U.S.A. - Numerous reports, more than 100 counts.
(2) 70 (10x). - Canada. - Hedberg (1967); Weimarck (1971, 1973).
(3) ca. 84 (12x). - U.S.A. - Weimarck (1971, 1973). Probably a stray high polyploid in an otherwise 2n = 56 population.
