| Notes | A close similarity between the mainly European Anthoxanthum alpinum and the eastern Asian A. nipponicum was suggested by Löve and Löve (1948) and is supported by comparison of karyotypes (Tateoka 1966). The morphology is largely similar. We have not compared types but have compared Atlantic, European, and Japanese material. The name A. nipponicum has priority for a species, the name subsp. alpinum for a subspecies. As Löve's private herbarium with the holotype probably is gone, the UPS isotype should perhaps be designated as lectotype. |
| Chromosomes | (1) 10 (2x). - Europe (N, C), Russia, Siberia, Far East (S), Greenland. - Numerous reports, hundreds of counts. (2) 20 (4x). - Europe (C). - Teppner (1970); Felber (1986, 1987). From at least ten localities. The autotetraploid is documented from France and Switzerland, the diploid throughout the range. Not included: A report of 2n = 20 from southeastern Siberia (Krogulevich 1971) should be checked against voucher. |
