Carex arctogena Harry Sm.
Publ. & Syn.L., Syst. Nat., ed. 10, 2: 1261 (1759). Lectotype (S): Sweden: "Lapponia", leg. Solander. Herb. Linn. 378.13 (Reinhammar and Bele 2002: 509).
NotesElven and Murray: The varietal combination of Hultén (1958) is invalid because of insufficient citation of basionym (ICBN demands full basionym data for combinations published after 01.01.1953). The subspecific combination Carex capitata subsp. arctogena (Harry Sm.) Böcher ex Á. Löve, D. Löve & B.M. Kapoor, Arctic Alpine Res. 3: 144 (1971), is superfluous as predated by Hiitonen (1944).
Chromosomes50. - Europe (N), Canada, U.S.A. (NE), Greenland. - At least four reports.
Not included: Two reports of 2n = 50 from western North America where this taxon should not occur (Moore and Calder 1964; Löve et al. 1971). They probably belong to small-grown C. capitata.
