NotesBall and Elven: Section Ovales is very complicated in North America where Mastrogiuseppe et al. (2002) accepted ca. 85 species. The northern representatives are still little investigated. The following additional species are reported by Flora of North America from northern provinces, one or more of which may reach the Arctic or the Borderline: Carex athrostachya Olney, C. bebbii (L.H. Bailey) Olney ex Fernald, C. crawfordii Fernald, C. petasata Dewey, C. phaeocephala Piper, C. preslii Steud., and C. tahoensis Smiley.
