Carex buxbaumii Wahlenb.
Publ. & Syn.Wahlenb., Kongl. Vetensk. Acad. Nya Handl. 24: 163 (1803). Lectotype (UPS THUNB-21771): Sweden: "in Suecia paludosis", leg. Wahlenberg (Moberg and Nilsson 1991: 291). Egorova's (1999: 389) designation of a lectotype on Danish (non-Wahlenberg) material is superfluous.
NotesElven, Murray, and Solstad: Kuzeneva (1954) reported Carex buxbaumii from Svjatoj Nos on the Murman coast (northwestern European Russia) but the specimens might belong to C. adelostoma. Reports of C. buxbaumii from Iceland are referable to C. adelostoma (Kristinsson 2008, in comment), confirmed by our own revision (ICEL).
The North American plants differ morphologically from the Eurasian ones, more so than, e.g., C. morrisseyi differs from C. adelostoma (see below). Two races may be present, also as there is an appreciable gap in northeastern Asia, but as far as we know there is no name or description available for the North American plants or any more thorough investigation supporting a split.
