NotesMurray and Elven: Ball and Zoladz (1994) investigated the North American variation in Carex petricosa. They did not find enough variation in the west and northwest to merit rank for some varieties described from there. They found the geographically isolated northeastern plants to differ sufficiently to be recognized as a variety.
