Carex membranacea Hook.
Publ. & Syn.Hook in G.F. Lyon, Attempt Repulse Bay: 195 (1825). Holotype (K): Canada: Nunavut, Southampton Island, Howe River, leg. Capt. Parry.
NotesElven and Egorova: Ford and Ball (1992) compared Carex membranacea, C. rotundata, and C. saxatilis s. lat. and accepted them all. Hultén's (1942: 383) proposal to include C. membranacea in C. saxatilis as a subspecies was not supported. Reznicek and Ford (2002) stated that C. membranacea most resembles C. rotundata. Our opinion is, however, that C. membranacea differs in many aspects from C. rotundata (e.g., rhizome, shoot basis and sheath colour, leaf shape, pistillate scales, and perigynia) and is more similar to C. saxatilis (s. str.). The reason for this discrepancy in views may be differences in concepts of and experiences with C. rotundata and C. saxatilis, see notes to C. saxatilis below.
