Carex utriculata Boott | |
Publ. & Syn. | Boott in Hook., Fl. Bor.-Amer. 2: 221 (1839). Holotype (K): Canada: the Northwest Territories, "Cumberland House to Bear Lake", leg. Dr. Richardson, annotated as C. utriculata by F. Boott. |
Notes | Ball, Murray, Egorova, and Elven: Griffiths (1989) confirmed the distinctness of the North American Carex utriculata from C. rostrata. Cody (1996) synonymized the North American C. utriculata Boott 1839 and the Eurasian C. rhynchophysa C.A. Mey. 1844 under the former name, probably based on a suggestion by Reznicek (1985) and also applied by Reznicek and Ford (2002). This synonymization is erroneous according to Egorova (1999) who concluded that "plants identical to type of C. utriculata do not occur in our territory" i.e., Eurasia. We agree and accept C. utriculata and C. rhynchophysa as two species. |
Chromosomes | 82. - Canada, U.S.A. - At least three reports. Ball: A report by Wahl (1940, for C. rostrata) has been transferred to C. utriculata as C. rostrata is not known from the area where Wahl's specimens were collected (mostly in Pennsylvania and neighbouring states). |
