Eleocharis quinqueflora subsp. quinqueflora
Publ. & Syn.Scirpus pauciflorus Lightf., Fl. Scot. 2: 1078 (1777). Type: Scotland: Breadalbane, Malghyrdy, leg. Stuart. - Eleocharis pauciflora (Lightf.) Link, Hort. Berol. 1: 284 (1827).
Chromosomes(1) 80-100. - Europe (N). - At least four reports.
(2) 132 134 136. - Europe (N, C). - At least four reports.
Not included: Fairly old reports of 2n = 20 from the British Isles (Davies 1956). Eleocharis quinqueflora is an easy species to recognize, and these British reports are therefore difficult to reject as due to misidentification. The number corresponds with that reported for E. acicularis. Löve and Löve (1975a) referred only reports of 2n = 132-136 for E. quinqueflora and omitted both the lower ones of Davies and their own previous 2n = 80-100. We should perhaps be skeptical to all the Löve reports.
