NotesSchoenoplectus pungens reaches the Borderline Arctic at Fort Severn on Hudson Bay at ca. 56N (Scoggan 1978b, as Scirpus americanus). East of the Atlantic, S. pungens is subtropical to temperate and does not reach the boreal zone.
       Smith: Schoenoplectus americanus has been widely misunderstood and is a much more southern species than previously reported. The northern plants belong to S. pungens.
